Introduction

You don't just live in a motorhome, you live with it. So it's important to choose the right one, look after it properly and make the best use of it.

This blog is based on my own experiences, as well as pulling together useful advice from other sources. Please use the Contents link on the left for an overview of posts.

What are you comfortable driving?

Without a doubt there are some fantastic motorhomes available with just about every home comfort you could ask for. But all of those comforts can only be accommodated by have a larger vehicle – which you have to drive around.

This may or may not be a limiting factor, depending how confident you are about driving large vehicles. Not just on major roads but also potentially through narrow country lanes – especially when the SatNav tries to be clever and take you on some obscure shortcut.

There will also be height and width restrictions to avoid. Many public car parks have height restrictions and some smaller residential roads have width restrictions. A modern SatNav may allow you to set preferences to avoid width restrictions.

Manoeuvring also needs to be considered as you will need to reverse into parking spaces etc. Newer models may well have reversing sensors and even cameras but you’re unlikely to find these on older models – though they can be retrofitted.

Also bear in mind that many models do not have a rear window, so you are dependent on wing mirrors, so make sure you have good ones with a wide field of vision and blind spot coverage. These should be pretty standard even on older models.
